Away to Pembroke 07/11/2015

After the highs of an outstanding victory against Cardigan it was back to earth with a bump at Pembroke with a thumping defeat against a very good side who made a nonsense of their league position.

There was little sign in the early stages  of what was to happen and the visitors probably had the better of the early opening exchanges but after ten minutes Pembroke's outside centre Toby Smith exposed the fragility of Saints defence to register the first try. Shortly afterwards Rob Phillips had to leave the field with a shoulder injury and an unexpected early appearance resulted for player/coach Andrew Deacon. Almost immediately the very lively Toby Smith touched down again and within ten minutes completed a hat trick of tries coupled with his own conversion to put the home side in a commanding position at 17 points to nil. Two further tries just before half time from wing Billy Wood and second row Will Edwards produced the half time score of 29 points to nil, with the visitors on the ropes in disarray.

Remarkably, with the strong wind now at their back, St Clears fought back well in the second half and for twenty minutes had the better of the possession and were unlucky not have opened their own account but it was not to be and having given their all, the visitors had very little left to resist the fight back when it came. Four tries were conceded in less than twenty minutes, two more to Toby Smith, one to his brother Sam and one to the openside prop. The final indignity shortly before the final whistle was a red card for full back Chris Rodenhurst and a push over try from the resulting penalty to produce the final score of 60 points to nil.
