Away to St Davids 14/01/2017

A bright but very windy venue for this Division 3 West A game, with St Davids opening proceedings into the teeth of the gale, in a fixture which has proved something of a problem for the visitors in the last two seasons with the home side winning on both occasions.

A good start was needed to avoid any repetition and full back Will Davies (pictured) provided the best possible after four minutes, with a try in the corner finishing off an excellent individual break from half way.

Five minutes later a repeat performance with another touchdown for Will, this time under the posts, plus the extras from James Davies, was capped off by another, ten minutes later for his third and a comfortable 17 point cushion.

A number of further chances for the visitors went begging and the home side were able to take advantage, coping with the blustery conditions better, gaining confidence from set piece advantage both in scrums and line outs, establishing both territory and possession for the rest of the half but without really looking like scoring against a solid St Clears defence.

On the stroke of half time however, in what proved to be a killer blow after all the good work from the home side, number 8 Tom Rees touched down for the bonus point score for the visitors and a half time score of 22 points without reply.

That momentum continued into the second half and the home side never really had a look in after that with regular scores from scrum half Llyr Ebsworth (4),  the first within one minute of the restart his first for the club, fly half Shane Morgan,to bring up the half century and after a brief respite, further scores from flanker Dewi Davies, second row Carwyn Davies  and a second for Tom Rees. The scoreboard was a bit of an injustice to the home side who never gave up and they were rewarded finally for their efforts with a consolation try in the last action of the game to produce the final score of 72 points to 5.

Next week sees a home game against Tregaron followed by games against both the Bowl quarter finalists, sitting in second and third in the table, away to Milford and home to Cardigan, in what may well prove to be a decisive period in this year’s final leading positions, although Pembroke could still have a say in that with the final game at Parc Griffith Jones on the 11th March.
