WRU National Bowl - Home to Tregaron 08-10-2016

An immediate return visit from new boys Tregaron for round two of the National Bowl, following the awful weather in last week’s away league match, had a perfect late autumn sunny day and excellent playing conditions for Tregaron to open proceedings.

Early exchanges consisted of the usual softening up encounters to establish superiority and the visitors continued where they left off last week with most of the game in the home half. Two missed penalties were the closest they got to scoring however as the home defence stood firm and the first opportunity for the home backs to stretch their legs resulted in a try in the corner for captain Mathew Lewis with an excellent conversion from full back Geraint Jones.

The pressure from the visitors home pack did not let up however and just as the home side were looking for some respite at half time, another skirmish from their backs led to a try just before the break for wing Jonathan Gosling, scoring under the posts. The easy conversion for Geraint Jones producing a score of 14 points to nil at half time.

With the outcome still finely balanced at the restart and the next score likely to prove decisive, almost immediately, outside half Shane Morgan broke clear to register the third try of the match and provide some breathing space. Another conversion from Geraint followed within minutes by a successful penalty from some distance off the upright put the home side 24 points to the good.

Still Tregaron battered the home defence but Saints remained resolute, showing guts and tenacity to keep the visitors at bay, before gradually wearing the opposition down and gaining a foothold in the visitors defence, resulting in an outstanding rolling maul pushing over from thirty yards for Mathew Dance to produce the try to settle matters. Another successful kick from Geraint registering a 100% success rate with the boot, produced a final score of 31 points without reply.
