St Clears opened proceedings in this Plate Round 2 fixture, kicking off into such a strong northerly gale that they were unable to reach the ten metre line from the kick off, but despite this clear indication that it was not going to be an easy day, they actually started the better of the two sides and looked dangerous, but once again, against the run of play, a mistake allowed Pencoed to break away and score under the posts for a converted try after ten minutes play.
The home side kept battling against the adverse conditions but failed to make much headway and found themselves conceding tries at regular intervals against visitors who were clearly buoyed by the weather advantage but aided by home side mistakes which were punished by a very capable back division exploiting every slip up.
Five tries were conceded, four of which presented easy conversions to open a forty point lead before Saints finally replied with their own try under the posts from scrum half Rhodri Evans, converted by James Davies to reduce the half time deficit to 33 points.
With the wind at their backs an early score from Saints flanker Tom Rees again converted by Davies appeared to set the scene for a fight back but despite pinning the visitors on their own line for long periods they were unable to penetrate the solid defence and as the wind slackened so the visitors were able to ease the pressure and despite being punished in an increasingly ill tempered game with two red cards and a couple of yellows were able to run out comfortable winners in the end with a final score of 40 points to 14.
