Home to Pontarddulais 05/05/2018

The last home game of the season, a good crowd and at last a beautiful sunny day to enjoy the occasion.

Very little in the early exchanges and the only opportunity to open the scoring fell to the visitors after five minutes who surprisingly chose to kick for touch rather than chance the posts, a decision regretted shortly afterwards when Saints centre Dan Birch touched down to open the scoring for the home side five minutes later.

Ten minutes later and a certain score to extend the lead was lost in the rutted surface when scrum half Dafydd Evans went sprawling ten yards out, when clear, after an interception on half way.

Captain for the day, Dafydd Page, with a typical power drive through a number of tackles from ten yards out rectified that unfortunate mishap to record the second try and although the conversion was missed, a ten point lead was a healthy state of affairs at the half hour stage.

‘Bont’ were clearly not going to give up without a fight however and five minutes later a try halved the advantage and at half time ten points to five to the home side was just about a fair reflection of the game at that stage.

End to end rugby with neither side gaining the upper hand was the continuing theme of the game and a ‘nearly’ try for Saints right wing Llyr Davies touching down fractionally beyond the dead ball line was matched by a ‘touchdown’ from Pontarddulais on the wrong line to continue the stalemate.

With twenty minutes remaining and the game poised to go either way flanker Tom Rees (pictured) recorded the crucial score and although the conversion was again narrowly missed a 15 points to 5 lead provided a degree of comfort for the home side.

With the visitors continuing to enjoy most of the possession but unable to break down a very solid home defence Saints looked the more likely to score and to extend their lead on a number of occasions but it fell to their lively scrum half Dafydd Evans to record the bonus scoring fourth try with the help of an assist from replacement Dafydd Walters and from in front of the posts a conversion from Adam Phillips .

Tom Rees with his second try rounded things off for the home team and a final score of 27 points to 5 was a very satisfactory result hopefully ensuring safety in the battle for Division 2 West
