Away to Mumbles 24/03/2018

First time visit to Mumbles for Saints and a good start for the visitors with the opening period of pressure almost producing a try but spoilt by lost possession, a lightening counter attack, coupled with a missed tackle and Mumbles were the first to register a score, completely against the opening run of play. An excellent conversion from the touchline and the visitors found themselves seven points in arrears within five minutes of the start.

Despite good forward work where Saints edged the battle throughout, Mumbles backs proved too good for the visitors and lost possession with weak defence proved the downfall again half an hour later with a repeat performance to double the lead for the home side.

A penalty just before half time, producing a yellow card for loose head prop Alan Davies, meant a half time score of 17 – nil and an uphill struggle in prospect.

The break did nothing to change the pattern of play and two further tries, one converted, within fifteen minutes and a score line of 29 points to nil began to suggest a cricket score could result.

Mass changes in the St Clears ranks followed, with all five subs introduced and that served to reverse the flow of the game. Saints came right back into it, producing a try for outside half Jake Philpin , under the posts converted by Shane Morgan, following good work from the backs and only the clock prevented more points for the visitors.

This improvement however only served to minimise the damage already suffered and overall it was a disappointing performance with much to ponder on before next week’s visit from Fishguard.
