Away to Llangwm 18/02/2017

Beautiful early spring sunshine but very sticky ground conditions greeted the visitors to Pill Parks for the Division 3 West A game in what was anticipated to be a routine comfortable victory for the league leaders against a team with only two victories all season and those narrowly against basement club, St Davids.

Llangwm had different ideas however and immediately from the start should have gone ahead when a touchdown was all but grounded under the posts only for St Clears’ blushes to be spared by a knock on!

Spectators could have been forgiven for mistaking which club was which in the early exchanges as Llangwm looked by far the better side and the visitors struggled to string anything together! After fifteen minutes however from a rare visit into the home side’s territory, fly half Shane Morgan (pictured) fed outside centre Mike Geogiau to force his way over for the first try converted by Geraint Jones.

Llangwm continued to dominate despite this success and against the run of play second row Carwyn Davies showed his class with an individual effort to record the second try which, with another conversion from Geraint Jones producing a 14 point lead, flattered the visitors. Indeed shortly before the break the home side were rightly rewarded for all their pressure with their own score with a try and conversion from number 10 Lewis Murpy and the half time score of 14 points to 7, although completely unexpected at the outset, was thoroughly deserved by the home side.

A serious ‘talking to’ and a reshuffle at the break led to a dramatic improvement and St Clears pack quickly gained the upper hand, leading to a push over try for number 8 Tom Rees and almost immediately, with the backs enjoying better possession from the dominant pack, a try for captain Mathew Lewis.

A rapidly tiring and disheartened home side who had given everything in the first half saw a number of injuries and constant interruptions with bewildering substitutions which badly affected the flow of the game and the resulting uncontested scrums effectively ended the contest as a competitive game of rugby.

Another excellent try for Mathew Lewis was the only flash of anything worth watching as the game finally petered out with a satisfactory result for the visitors but, as all present agreed, a far from satisfactory game!
