Home to Llangwm 12/11/2016

After a week off, following three successive defeats, St Clears badly needed a good result to get their season back on track and a first try in Saints colours for stalwart prop Gwyn Morris after four minutes was a nice way to gain the initial momentum to achieve that outcome with a conversion from scrum half Geraint Jones gaining maximum points.

Although Llangwm were a match for Saints up front they were not able to contain the home side’s back division who always looked dangerous and likely to score almost at will and tries for Nathan Evans on the wing and captain Mathew Lewis playing at full back, created some comfort with a lead of 17 points after less than twenty minutes play.

Five minutes later second row Dafydd Walters weighed in with a touchdown under the posts after good work from the forwards and with a conversion from Geraint the hoped for result seemed signed and sealed.

Llangwm however were far from finished and a gutsy fight back, earning them a penalty converted by their outside half plus a number of close scoring calls, meant St Clears had to fight for all their worth to keep them out and only the most robust of defensive work kept them at bay.

On the stroke of half time on a rare excursion into Llangwm’s half at that stage, the backs showed their class again and Shane Morgan (pictured), playing in an unaccustomed inside centre role, with one of his typical darting incisive runs, cut through the visitors defence to finish off an excellent move with a score close to the touchline producing the half time score of 29 points to three.

The second half again showed Llangwm’s resolve and from the outset Saints had to battle hard to defend against the determined fight back. Will Davies, on for Nathan Evans on the wing following what looked like a nasty injury requiring stretcher assistance, was in the right place to finish off another good back division display and effectively put the game out of reach for the visitors with the score at 34 to 3.

Still Llangwm battled on and only two killer blows with time running out, producing an excellent try for Lee Glanville and a ‘gift’ for a second for Shane Morgan, finally settled matters to snuff out their valiant resistance.
