Home to Fishguard 31/03/2018

A lively start with both sides looking for that all important first score. Jake Philipin was the first for St Clears to attempt a testing kick but despite the help of a strong wind at his back his penalty attempt fell just short. The next chance fell to Fishguard in front of the posts and despite the wind a successful penalty kick secured the first points for the visitors.

A yellow card for Saints influential Dafydd Page unsettled the home side after 25 minutes and immediately led to a try for the visitors albeit after some good work by their lively backs and although the conversion attempt hit the posts an 8 point lead in what promised to be a very tight match looked significant.

Saints raised their game however and the return of the sin binned Page, restoring the stability of a full side, almost immediately led to an excellent try from full back Adam Phillips, which he also converted, reducing the arrears to just one point at the half time break.

The second half continued in the same very tight manner but gradually the home side gained the upper hand eventually leading to a try from hooker Mat Done, his first for the club on his first appearance of the season returning after a long spell on the sidelines through injury.

Ten minutes later, with the home side’s backs confidence returning and beginning to show some nice rugby, Captain Mathew Lewis touched down in the corner to break his duck for the year and although the conversion attempt was narrowly missed, 17 points to 8 looked to be sufficient to secure the vital win required from this encounter.

Fishguard did not give up however and pushed hard in the final twenty minutes and a yellow card for Mathew Dance with five minutes remaining, led to a nervous finale, but Saints held on and were rewarded with an excellent fully deserved all important win.
