Away to Tumble 09/05/2018

It all started so well, on a filthy night in Parc y Mynydd Mawr where St Clears were visitors for the very first time, when within five minutes they went ahead thanks to an excellent try from outside centre Llyr Jones following good work from prop Mathew Swan with Saints enjoying the opening phases.

The enjoyment was short lived however as Tumble immediately took the game to the visitors and with the backs showing slick ball skills with good possession gained from the forwards, Saints struggled to contain them, unable to counter the forwards physicality.

A driving maul was the platform for a push over try which Saints had no answer for and a good conversion from skipper Steven Hewitt put them in front.

Within minutes another score was registered and the prospect of almost scoring at will with little or no resistance from the beleagured visitors looked a real possibility with the home side dominating proceedings.

A strong wind aided Hewitt’s influential role in affairs and his precise tactical kicking kept Saints on the back foot under extreme pressure from which there was no relief and a further try from another driving maul was recorded fifteen minutes later producing a half time score of 21 points to five.

There was to be no relief after the break either where missed tackles led to another try and a bonus point ten minutes after the restart and with another conversion Tumble stretched their lead still further with the visitors unable to resist their domination on all fronts.

A number of substitutions with the conditions worsening in the dimming light with the floodlights doing a good job to lighten the gloom seemed to steady the ship however and the visitors fortunes improved and somewhat against the resurgent’s visitors efforts a fifth try for the home side with the end of the game in sight brought up 35 points on the board.

A consolation touchdown for flanker Ryan Jeremias shortly before the final whistle produced some respectability but for the soaking wet visitors’ supporters a disappointing night and a result which in truth was as depressing as the weather and although the knowledge of remaining in the division is satisfactory, there is much to consider as thoughts turn to next season’s challenges.
