Away to Haverfordwest 23/01/2016

Following the Christmas break, extended by the weather to six weeks, St Clears were the visitors to the team top of Division 3A West with a makeshift bare 15 players on parade. The conditions underfoot were appalling and a steady downpour from the off, contributed to a mud bath soon after proceedings began.

Inevitably open rugby was not much on show and a hard physical encounter was the order of the day. The visitors had the better of the opening exchanges and a penalty converted after twenty minutes gave them a deserved lead.

Shortly afterwards however the home side were able to use their superiority in the break down and a push over try resulted. Ten minutes later another unconverted try produced the half time score of ten points to three, a score which just about correctly reflected the balance of play in a very evenly contested first half.

A yellow card five minutes into the second period for the visitors weakened their defensive line and the lively home side's backs began to take advantage with some excellent work in the difficult conditions, producing two converted tries within ten minutes and a scoreline of 27 points to three which effectively sealed the result.

Showing lots of guts, Saints didn't give up however, despite obvious signs of tiredness in the depleted squad, and after a period of ten minutes intense pressure camped on the home side's try line, captain Daffyd Page crashed over to touch down for a well deserved five points.

The conversion was missed, unfortunately and almost immediately from a break away deep in his own half Haverfordwest's tight head prop ran virtually the length of the field to touch down under the posts. The resulting conversion was the last action of the game and a scoreline of 34 points to eight was perhaps a little harsh on the visitors who gave their all and had no reason to feel embarrassed by the final result.
