Home v Llangwm 04/04/2015

A beautiful spring day with a fresh northerly breeze was the setting for the penultimate game of the season for Saint Clears at home against the team one place below them in the table, who were looking to complete the double, following their very narrow victory by one point earlier in the season by 25 points to 24.

The early stages suggested this could be a distinct probability with Saints, short of a few first team regulars and low on confidence, following the thrashing suffered at the hands of league leaders Fishguard last week, looking a little lack lustre in the opening stages. Indeed only a handling error saved the home side when a try should have been recorded after only ten minutes and then Llangwm's outside centre successfully converted a penalty attempt in front of the posts to take a deserved lead in the match.

Slowly but surely Saints did pick up their performance and first centre Ceri Jones and then flanker Daffyd Walters recorded tries within two minutes to put them ten points to three in front at the half hour stage. Llangwm were not to be dismissed lightly however and first a missed penalty, hitting the post, and then a try from their right wing put them right back in the game, with the half time score finely balanced at ten to eight in favour of the home side.

The second half was to prove a very different proposition however and Saints started with a resolve that clearly showed their intent to settle matters conclusively. Llangwm continued to show resistance up front but began to wilt against the home side's backs, who were beginning to enjoy themselves with enterprising performances from, in particular, half backs Ryan Thomas and Mathew Lewis and centres Ceri Jones and Liam Price.

Jones recorded his second try ten minutes after the restart and ten minutes later Luke Ingleton touched down under the posts to allow Ryan Thomas an easy conversion for the only extras of the day in the difficult kicking conditions. Llangwm then managed a try of their own through Aled Morgan but this was to prove to be the last act of resistance and with the score standing at 22 points to 13 the home side went into overdrive with Daffyd Walters picking up his second try followed closely by Liam Price and Steff Lewis both as a result of excellent work from the impressive Mathew Lewis The final play of the game resulted in a try in the corner for Ryan Thomas following more good work from Liam Price leaving the final scores at 42 points to 13 in favour of the home side.

An excellent result and a good all round performance now sets the scene for the final game of the season next week at home against old adversaries Pembroke, who will be looking to repeat their home victory earlier in the season and cement their third position in the league.
