Away to Pontyberem 06/10/2018

Following victories in their last two games St Clears arrived at Pontyberem looking to improve their lowly league position and despite going behind to an early penalty they looked in good form and were the first to cross the score line after only five minutes when captain Adam Phillips touched down finishing off good interplay from the back division, with a conversion to follow from James Davies.

Pontyberem responded well however and dominated the play with possession and territory being turned into two tries in a ten minute period midway through the half from both their wingers, close to the touchlines on either side of the pitch.

Two successful penalties for Saints from James Davies kept the visitors in touch but this sandwiched another try for Pont’s right wing Matthew Murphy with the extras added from a good conversion from outside half Mike Sauro to produce the half time score of 22 points to 13 in favour of the home side.

Another penalty from James Davies five minutes after the restart narrowed the gap but Saints were unable to achieve any advantage in the pattern of the game with the home side continuing to apply most of the pressure with the pack looking very strong and a further try under the posts twenty minutes into the second half restored a comfortable lead of 13 points.

A late resurgence from the visitors, with the backs showing flashes of what they are capable of, revived hopes of snatching a result and with five minutes remaining outside half Rhodri Jones finished off an excellent period of play with a flamboyant try under the posts and with Davies’s quick drop conversion there looked to be every chance of pullig off that unlikely outcome.

Ultimately a losing bonus point was to be their only reward howevrer, although a surprising miss from a last minute Sauro penalty almost cancelled that out!
