Away to Tumble 20/04/2019

Penultimate league game for St Clears away to Tumble on a gorgeous warm sunny day and a good start with a successful penalty kick from James Davies after only two minutes suggesting a good afternoon in prospect for the visitors but with both sides looking to get something from a very disappointing season lots of mistakes and careless errors by both sides disrupted any threat from both sides to gain any ascendancy.

Tumble broke the deadlock after twenty minutes with an unconverted try to edge into the lead but without any real conviction in their play, also incurring the wrath of the referee on a number of occasions which allowed Saints to take the upper hand, leading to two opportunistic tries for scrum half Rhodri Evans in the space of ten minutes, both converted by Davies who then weighed in with his own try in the corner following some good play by the visitor’s backs and with another conversion from Davies the visitors found themselves in the lead by 22 points to 5 at the half time interval.

More undisciplined play from Tumble after the restart led to the referee awarding a penalty try after less than ten minutes and the lead was extended, somewhat fortuitously perhaps, to what appeared to be a very comfortable 24 points with the visitors looking set for a good win as a consolation for the trials and tribulations of the difficult season.

Whether by accident or design or simply Saints relaxing with such a good lead or just running out of steam, suddenly the game turned full circle and from nowhere Tumble completely overturned the arrears in an astonishing space of twenty minutes to register five tries and take the lead at 38 points to 29!

The visitors did steady the ship at that point when it looked as though there would be no end to the floodgate, to record a final try through captain of the day, flanker Ryan Jeremias, with the last action of the game and Saints were once again left rueing the cruel twist of fate which the extra losing bonus point did nothing to redress and was certainly not the ideal preparation for next week’s final game of the season with Pembroke with the championship perhaps to be decided then.
