Another new opponent and another challenge in Division 2 West, against a side two divisions higher just over one year ago, but the home side were clearly up for the event, following a difficult opening set of matches with nothing to show for the first three games, not helped by having to field a different set of players on each occasion, and they were the liveliest of the two sides in the opening exchanges.

With only fifteen minutes on the clock, assistant player coach Rhodri Jones, playing at outside half to fill the player shortage, found a gap in the visitors defence to record the first score for the home side and a straight forward conversion for James Davies added the extras for a seven point lead.

Another opportunity to extend the lead went begging with a difficult penalty attempt from James Davies, which hit the post, but ten minutes later Cieran Stephens finished off an irresistible period of pressure play which resulted in a deserved score topped up by the extras from James Davies again, producing a comfortable score of 14 points to nil.

Five minutes later Tycroes lost their influential full back with a red card following a scuffle and a mindless reactionary response which left the referee with no alternative but to dismiss the miscreant and at half time Saints looked home and dry with a good lead correctly reflecting the balance of play facing a team one man short.

Ten minutes into the second half a red card for the home side’s flanker Ryan Cole, following a ‘tip tackle’ offence, removed the one man advantage and with the visitors responding more positively to the unexpected equilibrium Saints found themselves battling to maintain their advantage.

The home side’s defence stood firm however and despite coming under a great deal of pressure and one or two scares, as well as missing a few opportunities themselves to settle the match, achieved their first victory of the season and a satisfactory result for all concerned!!
